Yesterday marked the first day of the long-awaited trial of Calvin Crew, accused of murdering Christina Spicuzza in the first degree back on February 10, 2022. Back in September of 2023, I had been asked to do some sketches for the local news for pre-trial motions in the case, and then again last month for jury selection. I decided I wanted to go back for the trial and finish sketching the story. I went down yesterday to sketch and plan on going at least a couple more days this week.
When I'm in the courtroom for sketching, I am not usually set off to the side, but set IN among the crowd of people. Just as I was during the Pittsburgh Synagogue Trial, yesterday I was seated next to the victim's family and loved ones. Even though I am there to work and create a visual record of the day, it's a stark reminder of the loss and the humanity of each person in the room, as well.
Sketch 01: The Honorable Judge Edward J. Borkowski delivering instructions to the jury.
Sketch 02: Deputy District Attorney Emma Schoedel delivering opening statements.
Sketch 03: Attorney Andy Howard delivering opening statements for the defense.
Sketch 04: Brandon Marto on the stand, the first witness for the prosecution and life partner of the victim.
(I actually did a fifth sketch but I did not like it so I am not including it.)
I'll update again after the trial concludes.
